On November 13, 2006, Auto Theft Detectives were attempting to identify a Chevrolet Tahoe as a possible stolen vehicle at 1402 Mengal Road, when a newer model, silver in color Cadillac Deville pulled into Rays Salvage yard (1402 Mengal Road) displaying a Louisiana Temporary License plate. The Auto Salvage yard had been searched the previous week as part of an ongoing multi agency investigation and several stolen vehicles were located in the yard. The driver of the Cadillac was identified as Charles Davis (b/m 8-24-66, 11417 Stan Avenue). Davis was asked if Detectives could check his vehicle to ensure that it was not a stolen vehicle. Davis granted Detectives permission to inspect the vehicle. The public VIN number of the Cadillac appeared to have been tampered with so further investigation was done. During this investigation, the correct VIN for the vehicle was obtained and did not match the VIN displayed on the vehicle. The correct VIN was checked and it was learned that the vehicle, a 2005, silver in color, Cadilac Deville, had been reported as a stolen vehicle to the Slidell Police Department on 10-23-06, under their file number 06-102617. Davis was taken into custody and charged with L.R.S. 14:68.4 titled Unauthorized use of a Motor Vehicle as well as L.R.S. 14:207 titled Altering or Removal of Identifying Numbers Prohibited. Davis was then booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on the aforementioned listed charges.
