Special Operations

The EBRSO Special Operations Unit consists of the SWAT Team, the Maritime Response Team, and the Dive Recovery Unit.

The mission of the EBRSO Special Operations Unit is simple, to be prepared and equipped to professionally respond to any emergency that is outside the scope of normal law enforcement operations. Those unusual situations could be a hostage situation, a natural disaster, high risk drug warrant service, terrorist threat or attack, and any maritime related patrol, rescue or recovery operations.

The Members of the Special Operations Unit are on an on call basis. They serve in a fulltime capacity throughout the Sheriff's Office in Divisions such as Uniform Patrol, Detectives, Narcotics, and Trainers. The EBRSO SWAT team also has 4 reserve Deputies assigned to it: 3 are doctors and one is an EMT and Baton Rouge Fireman. Their special skills are an asset to the team, as well as the citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish.

The EBRSO SWAT Team has grown into one of the premier teams in the Southeast United States. Federal and state grants are aggressively sought out and applied for. This approach has provided the following equipment to the Sheriff's Office for the benefit of our Citizens:

The above equipment has widely broadened the ability of our team to safely respond to a myriad of situations ranging from a drowning to a bridge collapse or from a hostage situation to a North Hollywood type shooting incident.

The EBRSO Maritime Response Team (MRT) regularly conducts underwater search and recovery and dive operations using side scan sonar and underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROV) with underwater cameras.

The EBRSO MRT has conducted maritime search and recovery operations in support of other law enforcement agencies in Mobile County (Alabama), St. Tammany Parish, Orleans Parish, Livingston Parish, Natchitoches Parish, and West Baton Rouge Parish.

In addition to operations, the EBRSO MRT actively trains using this sophisticated equipment. The EBRSO MRT has published a document, Underwater Recovery Operations for Law Enforcement: An Introduction to Theory, Equipment, and Procedures Using Side Scan Sonar, to assist other law enforcement agencies in using side scan sonar equipment. This document is a training guide to conducting underwater recovery operations and reviews various techniques using side scan sonar, Hypack navigational software, acoustic targets (sonar markers), and GPS units. The document is available free of charge via the above website link.

Law enforcement and other public safety agencies interested in requesting assistance from the EBRSO MRT can contact Capt. Jonathan Ned for procedures.
