School Drug Task Force came into being in 1991 from an agreement between then Mayor Tom Ed McHugh, Chief of Police Wayne Rogillo, and former Sheriff Elmer Litchfield. The mission was to monitor and eradicate crimes such as drugs, weapons and assault in the school systems within East Baton Rouge Parish. Agents were chosen from both the Sheriff's Offcie and the Baton Rouge Police Department and numbered five, which included a secretary.
Though small in number, these agents have averaged well over one-hundred and fifty (150) cases each year ending in arrest and seizure of weapons and drugs. With the emergence of shooting throughout the country in school, the Task Force has stepped up the monitoring of these type of acts in an effort to head off any potential threat to our children and school staff. The area of investigation includes all public, private and parochial schools.
