Greg Phares
Sheriff Greg Phares is a native of East Baton Rouge Parish and a 1976 graduate of LSU. He joined the Baton Rouge Police Department in 1972 and served in Traffic, Uniform Patrol, Narcotics, Detective Bureau and Armed Robbery. He was Commander of the Armed Robbery Division and of the SWAT Team. He was Chief of Police from 1991-2001. During his tenure the Baton Rouge Police Department achieved National Accreditation.
From 2001-2003 he was Lead Instructor of the Crisis Response Team course at the U.S. State Department/LSU Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program where he trained counterterrorist team officers over a dozen countries.
He joined the Sheriff's Office in July 2003 and became Chief Deputy in November 2004. He became Sheriff on December 1, 2006 upon the retirement of Sheriff Elmer Litchfield.
Sheriff Phares is a graduate of the FBI's National Executive Institute and of the Leadership Greater Baton Rouge and Leadership Louisiana Programs. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge and serves on the Board of the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Greater Baton Rouge.
He is Co-Chairman of the Board of the Capitol Area Regional Training Academy and is a former member of the Association of Chief's of Police Firearms Committee.
