EBRSO Responds to Report of Gun Found Last Week at School

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a gun found at school this morning following a call from School Board Security notifying deputies that school administration discovered the gun on Friday.

According to administration at Wedgewood Elementary, a teacher advised at approximately 3:30 p.m. that a student had a gun in his backpack. The 6-year-old student was reportedly brought to the office where the gun was located. Administration contacted the child’s parent who was given the weapon and left with the child.
Deputies contacted the child’s mother who stated that the weapon was kept locked up separate from the ammunition, but her 19-year-old son takes it out for protection when she leaves the home. The grandmother stated that she believes the child found it and placed it in his backpack.

This investigation is still ongoing. No threats were reportedly made at the school or elsewhere. Charges are expected.
