The School Drug Task Force responded to a call today at approximately 1:00 p.m. to Wedgewood Elementary, 2330 Aspenwood Drive, in reference to a student with a gun. According to reports an anonymous student told a school administrator that another student had a weapon. The unloaded .45 caliber weapon was found in the student’s booksack.
The 12-year-old male student will be charged with Illegal Possession of a Firearm on a School Campus and will be booked into Juvenile Detention. No threats were made, and the 5th grader stated he brought the weapon to be “cool.” It was determined he took the weapon from a relative’s residence.
The School Drug Task Force is a multi-agency unit made up of East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputies and Baton Rouge Police Officers.
